Overview The Romany was Nigel's first sea kayak design.  It was also the first sea kayak to have a day hatch, and keyhole cockpit as standard.  The design has stood the test of time and is still at the top of its field.  It is the perfect kayak for exploring, coaching, surfing, playing and short expeditions.
Specifications

Width: 21.5 inches ( 0.54m )

There has been a demand for smaller sea kayaks, especially as the number of female sea kayakers grow. Instead of producing a new kayak NDK decided to modify the Romany and Explorer.  For these models a LV (Low Volume option will be available.) All kayaks have modified cockpits and reduced volume. The hulls will essentially are the same.

The LV kayaks have been fitted with a new Keyhole cockpit rim customised to fit smaller kayakers. The rim is 3.5" (87mm) shorter than the standard and 1" (25mm) narrower with the leg braces brought back towards the paddler. All kayaks have less volume and a re-designed front deck.

Deck: 2.5 oz C.S mat plus foredeck rescue patch of extra 1.5 oz mat.
Hull: 2.5 oz C.S mat plus 8 oz cloth. 2 inch keel strip. Double thickness reinforced bow and stern.
Inside seam: 2 inch diolen plus 3 inch glass cloth.
Outside seam: 1 inch glass cloth.

The Romany was designed in 1993 with the following features:
  • A low rear deck for easy rolling.

  • A white water cockpit.

  • This gives the kayaker excellent grip, control and allows a quick exit if needed!

  • Three compartments, including an offset day hatch, allowing the kayaker to reach into the compartment whilst at sea.

  • Sloping rear bulkhead behind the seat, allowing the kayak to be emptied by lifting the bow (no X rescue necessary).

  • Polished deck recesses.

  • Plenty of room for large feet or warm winter footwear.

  • Exceptional maneuverability, with direction stability. Very fast in following seas.

  • Large round hatches

  • Minimum weather cocking in strong winds.
