The Paddle UK Sea Kayak Safety and Rescue course aims to provide paddlers with the key safety and rescue skills required to operate safely and be able to deal with common problems on the sea, in both sheltered and moderate conditions.

Throughout the course, paddlers will explore simple strategies and safe skills that can provide the tools to solve common paddling issues. Topics covered include safety frameworks, contact and towing rescues, self-rescues, dealing with equipment damage/failure, as well as assisting others.

The course is suitable for all ages and great for individuals, clubs and groups wanting to expand their safety practices on the sea. Suitable craft include sea kayaks and sea specific sit on tops.  Participants need to either hold the Paddle UK Sea Kayak Award or equivalent ability to the paddling environment and have the boat control required to participate fully in the course.

Over the Course we will look at the following modules:

Module 1 : Sources of information – Tides, swell and weather.

Module 2 : Safety Framework – Choice of location, clothing & equipment and calling for help.

Module 3 : Contact and towing rescues

Module 4 : Self rescues & assisted Self rescue

Module 6 : Dealing with equipment failure – lost day hatch, flooded bulkhead and keg failure.

Module 7 : Landing and First Aid – Landing a casualty and first aid at sea or on the shoreline.

What experience do I need?

To get the most out of the course you should be fit and comfortable swimming, floating and capsizing (assisted by a flotation device) in deep and dynamic moving water. All participants will be required to complete a full medical questionnaire.

This course is suitable for kayakers who have completed formal training to an intermediate level, ie hold the Sea Kayak Award  and have some experience in a range of ocean environments as a competent group member with their own paddling and safety kit.

You must have an understanding of the different strokes how to use them in moderate to windy conditions up to force 4. Some previous knowledge of simple rescues is beneficial.

The objective you should have for doing this course is to leave with a structured understanding of sea safety and rescue. Knowing your areas of weakness or strengths with the goal of progressing.

We would expect to cover distances of between 10 – 15 km (7 hours) a day depending on conditions.
