Simons expedition to
Madagascar turned out to be very
different to what he expected.
After completing half of the
circumnavigation in 2008 with Phil
Clegg, Simon returned alone to
complete the second half. He
planned on meeting up with a local
paddler to finish off the
circumnavigation but it soon became
evident that this was not going to
work as planned. Simon made
the hard decision to stop the
circumnavigation and to use his time
to explorer the country by kayak and
pick out the best possible
adventures. He ended up
completing a first decent of a wild
river high in the mountains,
paddling up the west coast in a
cyclone and then taking a wooden
sailing cargo boat for 4 days back
to the nearest road. To finish
off the expedition he paddled down
the biggest river in Madagascar to
Majunga where he started the
expedition with Phil the previous
year.
The expedition gave
Simon the opportunity to really
experience the culture and wildlife
of this amazing country.
Please have a look at some of his
photos to get an idea of the
expedition. He sent through
updates daily which can still be
viewed to get an idea of what the
trip was like.
